Petronas FP-1: Malaysia First Superbike

This time we talk about mystery story, is not a mystery but the mystery of a haunted ghost in the local motoring world. This is a story about Malaysia's first superbike named Petronas FP-1. If you follow the development of the local motorcycle world, will remember the superbike in the global arena.

The story begins 13 years ago, around the year 2003 in which Petronas engaging with a special project together with the Sauber Petronas Engineering to participate in MotoGP. But eventually they decided to join the WSBK Superbike World Championship games. This era was a golden age in which Proton is also working with Kenny Roberts at Proton Team KR team.

Among the conditions set by the organizers of WSBK is, Petronas must produce at least 150 units of FP-1 for markets. As a result, the first Malaysia Superbike was born. The Petronas FP-1.

Petronas Team to WSBK is known by the name of Foggy Petronas Racing takes its name from the British WSBK champion 4 times, Carl Fogarty. This cooperation is essential to commercialize technology that F1 is on this motorcycle. Among the riders ever rode this bike is Troy Corser, Chris Walker, James Haydon, Garry McCoy, Craig Jones and Steve Martin. However, this team only managed to finish on the podium as much as 3 times.

When Petronas decided to join the WSBK, Sauber did not agree and had to withdraw because of a lack of interest in WSBK. Petronas then collaborate with Suter Racing Technology, which has a long history in the championship Grand Prix to develop the FP-1 engine. Engineering firms from the UK, MSX International has been selected to produce a street version of the model

Now, why this motorcycle is less prominent in WSBK? One reason is that during this motorcycle engine developed maximum capacity set for the motorcycle 900cc 3 cylinders. FP-1 is produced with a 899cc engine. However when it debuted in 2003, a new law allowing the FIA capacity of up to 1000cc. So FP-1 short 100cc compared to other machinery. It does not seem fair!

(Sexy ass~)

Its production is also much delayed due to various problems. But the announcement was made in 2005 on the inclusion of these motorcycles on the market. 75 units manufactured in the UK to market there and they are installed in 75 Modenas factory in Gurun, Kedah for the local market. Do not mess with the ability Modenas. .

Then problems arose again when the FP-1 does not have a distributor network for sales. In Malaysia there is only one single distributor, Naza Bikers Dream. As of now, the news FP-1 seemed to sink in the mass media.

The question is WHERE are these bikes now?

In 2010, the MCN (Motorcycle News UK) has found 60 units of FP-1 in a warehouse in Essex. It said in 2012, motorcycles UK is owned by Ark RnD but then a total of 129 units have been sold to a Malaysian company named Momoto.

(The street legal FP-1 from Momoto)

Later, Momoto given a re-branding and known as MM1. The vehicle was launched in style, not too long ago and it is quite encouraging news between us. Nevertheless, the project was delayed again when landing taxes and customs duties all outstanding motorcycle. All units have been seized by the authorities. Momoto has filed suit against Petronas, a total RM83 million and to date there has been no resolution.

Meanwhile, experts thought the motorcycle was kept longer, the higher its value will rise. It is estimated that if the price is now successfully marketed is around 20,000 to 25,000 pounds sterling. In the RM was not expensive (SARCASTIC), about RM150,000 for a motorcycle output in 2005. Which is more expesive compared to Ducati R, ZX10R and R1.
Petronas FP-1 is now just another memory~ RIP

TOP 5: Newbie Mistakes

1. No License

License is not just for you ride superbike legally on the road. But, also giving you the very basic knowledge of riding a superbike. If you think riding superbike is easy, you are wrong. They also teach you law of the road. So before you know your bike, know yourself first. Don't be a fool riding superbike without legal license. License also enable your insurance to protect you. No license, the insurance has right to refuse any claim, giving you more headache if accident happens.

2. Every Bike Can Be Ride As Superbike

So, owning a big bike, first thing you will ask yourself; " How fast she can go?". Well, if you, the newbie, and your first bike is like Fz150, Yamaha R25 or even Kawasaki ER6F, don't even think about pushing your bike to the limit. Let's take ER6F as example. In early 2011, most of ER6F complaints about broken valve. This did not occur on ER6N. Why? Because the thought ER6F is a superbike. So the press it to the limit. Malaysian ER6F top speed is 220 km/h before cut off. This is so WRONG. ER6F it is a touring bike. It ain't mean to ride fast. Same goes if you own Fz150, R25, Blade 250. These only has superbike design, but not superbike engine. They are not design for continuing top speed.

3. Overconfident while Lack of Skill

The term 'Ride With Confidence' is totally useless if you are lack of skill. Riding superbike needs certain level of confident but overconfident may lead you into disaster. So to be safe, just remember: Don't ride faster than you can stop.

4. Don't Have Emergency Tools

Alright. What's the most important thing that you should have with you? POWER BANK! Now day cellphone seems the most important thing to us. It also allow us to reach whoever we need whenever we need them. So, if your bike is break down, or involved a crash, cellphone is what you need to call for help. But it is useless when you battery is dead and you have no charger.

Beside that, please bring a mini kid of first aid. It might not for you but if you see someone who involved in accident, you can help them. Maybe you can temporary stop bleeding while waiting for ambulance came up. Also, please bring some tools like allen key and some spanners (size 8-12). There might have some problem that you can fix by our own.

5. Using Racing Spec Superbike For Daily Use.

ZX10R and Z100SX

So, you might a rich kid that love to show off. Purchase a 600cc or 1000cc of racing spec superbike as your first bike. That's fine. But did a racing bike is what you need? remember, Racing Spec bikes are not suitable to ride slow and heavy traffic jammed. If you using your bike for weekend long ride, that's fine. But, urban ride is not really suit on you. You bike might getting jammed engine or high temp overheat

There is alternative bike for you to ride and show off without damaging you bike. Like instead of Kawasaki ZX10R (a racing spec bike), you can buy a Kawasaki Z1000SX. Instead of Yamaha R6, why don't buy Yamaha XJ6, which is suitable for both long and city rides!

8 Types of Superbike Engine.

Some of us might have been riding different types of bike, with different types of engine system.  We heard some of engine types like Single Cylinder, Parallel Twin, V-Twin, and 4 inline, but do we really know how it works and what are the advantages? Let's we figure it out.

1. Single Cylinder

The most basic configuration of the engine with just one cylinder generates power entirely. Its compact construction leads to low manufacturing costs, making single-cylinder engine is a popular choice for motorcycle market economy.

Even so, this does not mean that the engine is not suitable for those more speed. With torque (torque) is high at low RPM, making motorcycle sport / naked equipped engine is so agile in the city and short corners.

Usually found at:
  • Motorcycle economy; scooter or Kapchai
  • Sportbike urban (usually naked); KTM Duke series, the Honda CBR250, Kawasaki z250SL
  • Supermoto / dual purpose; Kawasaki D-Tracker X, Demak DTM200

Advantage:
  • Compact size and sleek, perfect for use in urban and off-road
  • Easy handling
  • Torque / strong pickup on the same engine displacement
  • Low Maintenance

Disadvantages:
  • Strong vibration, easily felt if taken for long trips
  • Maximum power (HP) which is less than the multi-cylinder engine that has similar displacement.
  • Not suitable for high displacement

2. Parallel Twin

Standard engines for most motorcycles 250cc class. Provide a balance between torque and HP makes a 250cc motorcycle engine using this type of choice to those who want the best performance without having to upgrade licenses. On the same goal, parallel twin of choice for high displacement motorcycle (600cc and above) which is marketed as a daily vehicle like Honda ER6N, Versys and Yamaha MT-07.

Usually found at:
  • Sportbike 250cc high performance; Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Yamaha R25
  • streetbike; Yamaha MT-07, Honda CB500F
  • Dual-sport; Kawasaki Versys, BMW F800GS
Advantage:
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Responsive at low RPM
  • Perfect for travel in the city or on the highway far
Disadvantages:
  • The vibe is more pronounced when compared side by side with in-line 4

3.V-Twin

Engine configuration must exist on a Harley Davidson and Ducati. Like the previous twin parallel, the V-Twin lose In-line 4 when compared to the maximum HP capable of reaching but has a wide power band advantage, giving the torque a high degree of shrinkage. For a  cruiser motorcycle like the Harley Davidson, the higher torque of any time than the V-Twin Values is more appreciated than the maximum power of In-line 4 that is only reached when it is in the collar.

Usually found at:
  • Ducati Motorcycles
  • Harley Davidson
  • Naza Blade / Hyosung GTR
Advantage:
  • High torque and broad powerband
  • Very responsive
  • Have a slim profile and a lower center of gravity

Disadvantages:
  • The vibe feels easier
  • Less power (HP) for the same displacement.

4.Four Inline

Smooth power delivery (smooth) and high-revving, plus a tune-able exhaust noise, motorcycles pitched inline 4 cylinder motorcycles into cult-like following a lust for power on the highway. Also contribute popularity of this engine configuration, it becomes a choice of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers for a long time and as we all know the brand Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki is well known in the country as compared to western brands like Triumph.

Usually found at:

  • Sportbike middle class; Yamaha XJ6, Kawasaki Z800
  • Supersport Bike (Superbike); Yamaha R1, Honda CBR1000RR, BMW S1000RR

Advantage:

  • Smooth power delivery on middle and high RPM
  • High-revving, able to be deployed over long before it reaches the redline you own or sour stomach
  • Melodious sound

Disadvantages:
  • Keep following the energies deployed only available at high RPM
  • Weak in terms of torque, can feel vibration if taken slowly. Cause it does not fit applied to the low displacement motorcycle.
  • Most motorcycle too wide and too big

5. Boxer Twin

Normally only available on dual-purpose motorcycles such as BMW R1200GS, this type of engine provides torque so powerful to be able to drive the BMW R1200GS weighing 270kg is idle (idle). Why is called the 'boxer'? Because the rules of the transverse cylinder engine similar to the 'boxer' Subaru Impreza in which movement similar to the movement opposing cylinder boxer punches.

Usually found at:
  • BMW R1200GS, BMW R nine T

Advantage:
  • Very high torque
  • Linear powerband provides smooth power delivery
  • High stability with a low center of gravity

Disadvantages:
  • Wide engine size limit rake during cornering
  • Torque reaction; effects such as G-Force acting on the side of its transverse movement of the piston, disrupt stability during cornering

6. Triple/3-Inline

The perfect combination of power and torque of the parallel twin peak power of high-revving inline four, triple configuration cylinder being their favorite ride ever. Why? Triple cylinder ensure you have the power in every situation, whether cornering or even on the straight lines.

Usually found at:
  • Triumph Motorcycles; Street Triple 675RS, Daytona 675 and Speed Triple R
  • Yamaha MT-09
Advantage:
  • Characteristics balanced between two and four cylinder
  • The versatility, performance comparable to any good or even bend the straight path
  • The sound is quite unique

Disadvantages:
  • Options are limited motorcycle.
  • For now easily available with just a Yamaha MT-09 only, while Triumph less well received due to the cost of a little expensive when compared to its competitors. But for those who care about the subtleties of manufacturing (refinement), worth it to pay more for Triumph motorcycles.

7. V4

Like before, the V-4 promises a balance between the two and four-cylinder configuration with strong torque at low RPM and power at high RPM. What are the attractions in the V4 is a more linear power delivery and smooth at all RPM levels and a more slender profile makes it easier to control. Even so, the engine manufacturing complex and costly, make not many manufacturers interested in using this engine other than the purpose of the race.

Usually found at:
  • Supersport or tourer (cruiser); Aprilia RSV4, Aprilia Tuono V4, Yamaha VMax
  • MotoGP motorcycle race; Honda RC213V, Ducati Desmosedici
Advantage:
  • Smooth power delivery and torque higher than the in-line
  • A more streamlined profile helps control
  • Unique sound

Disadvantages:
  • Options are limited motorcycle. As Triple earlier, V4 give high satisfaction to their owners if they can spend more.
  • Complex engine configuration also increases the cost of repairs and modifications compared to the in-line 4 engine.

8.V6

Unlike many sportbikes, V6 engine are more commonly used for leisure ride, like Honda Goldwing. V6 not just giving better torque, but also giving you smooth ride, and engine reliability, especially for long rides.

Usually found at:
  • Honda Goldwing
Advantage:
  • Smooth power delivery and torque higher than any bike
  • Enough power to move big chassis motorcycles.
Disadvantages:
  • Bigger engine means bigger cost. Maintenance won't be cheap.
  • Complex engine configuration also increases the cost of repairs and modifications compared to any engines. Finding someone who can fix your bike won't be an easy task.

TRIVIA
  1. Most Racing-Spec superbike are using 4-inline,triple,V-twin and V4.
  2. Even the biggest engine displacement, V6 engine are not racing spec. Pushing to the top speed will ear your engine compartments quickly.
  3. Cheapest bike, of course the single cylinder engine, and the most expensive bikes are the V6.
  4.  Four inline Triple and V4 has best sound especially when equipped with right exhaust.

Review CF Moto 650 NK

CF Moto. If this is your first time heard of it, I am not surprise! CF Moto is a China company that focused on Motorcycle Export. They are expert on it. Some of they well-known bike are CF Moto 650NK and 650 TR. The 650 NK is really close to Kawasaki ER6N, and has 80% looks of Benelli TNT 600 headlamp.

The 650 TR

650 NK (Credit to Marcin)

CF Moto is one of few 600cc bikes in Malaysia that you can get in very cheap price. But, the question is, it this China bike reliable? Well, from the expert review on Youtube, this bike is using Ducati ECU, and using Kayata suspension, which is one of the best suspension in the world. Its a money worth bike!

From the owner review, they are satisfied with this bike, especially when it comes with affordable price. These are the list of top problems/complains from the user:

  • The fuel float isn’t very accurate and probably needs addressing. The gauge on the LCD Instruments measures the fuel in 11 bars, but it jumps up and down by about three bars at a time.
  • Parallel twin engines tend to buzz a fair bit at high revs and this is no different. It isn’t annoying and doesn’t make your hands tingle, but it does blur the image in the mirrors. You can’t tell if you are being followed by an ambulance or an ice-cream van!  The wing mirror housings are good quality, but the mirror needs improved isolation.

  • The indicator switch is flimsy and doesn’t always trigger. Every time you use it, you have to look down and check that it has actuated or cancelled.
  • On a long haul, the hard seat becomes a bit of a pain. At least it’s flat and there aren’t supports that dig into your backside. Maybe a thicker or better-quality foam would help.
  • On bumpy roads the suspension is a bit choppy and lacks the subtlety to take the sting out of sudden bumps.
Seems not a major problem to me, but if you wish to avoid these problems, I may suggest you to take Kawasaki ER6N instead. Tey have almost same design but Kawasaki ER6N is twice expensive than 650NK. How about spec? Again, almost same as Kawasaki ER6N. So have a look:

Hey there. I have been busy recently building my own bike. Yeah, custom bike. I already order Lifan 250cc engine(a racing spec engine), and using delta box frame. I got that from Skyline. For the fairing, I try to design it by copycat some from Ducati and Aprilia design. In few months, we will see how this works. But for now, only the frame and the engine are ready, but the fairing still on design work. It could take some time, but let's hope it's work!

Ahhhh, this will be nice.

There are 2 types of 250cc Lifan engine. V-Twin and parallel Twin. I pick the parallel twin, since it produces nice sound and great top speed power. Lifan is made in Taiwan but there is authorized dealer in Malaysia. So it's easier for me to get the engine. I list down the spec of this Lifan engine that I gonna use for my bike:

Type: Double-cylinder,four-stroke air-cooled hand-clutched 250cc
Displacement:233ml
Compression ratio: 9.2:1
Primary reduction: 3.631
Bore x Stroke:53mm x 53mm
Max.Power & Rotating Speed:13kw/8500r/min
Max.Net Power & Rotating Speed:12.5kw/8500r/min
Rated Power & Rotating Speed:11kw/8500r/min
Max.Torpue & Rotating Speed:15.5N.m/7000r/min
Min.Fuel Consumption: ≤354g/kw.h
Ldling Speed:1400r/min
Ignition:CDI
Starter:electric starter
Lubrication: Pressure/splash
Transmission: 5 speed

As stated, this engine is using air cooled system. So I have to use oil cooler radiator, to make sure this engine has long lifespan. This is a racing spec engine, so it is not suitable for daily use. It's okey, I will get another bike. This gonna be my collection anyway. Besides, proud to have my own custom bike.
